Candle, Chord, Veil and Coin Sponsors are significant in traditional Filipino weddings. My husband and I were asked by my neice Chantal Rafael in 2022 to be Veil Sponsors for her 2023 nuptials. We were touched and honored to be chosen. Kendall and I took a closer look at its symbolism and the roll we committed as Veil Sponsors. What did it mean? What were our roles? What were we to do?
On June 23, 2023, we, the Sponsors marched in the wedding ceremony behind the groom and ahead of the wedding party dressed in their dusty blue matching attires. My heart melted seeing my cousin Josie (her Mom and my late Dad are siblings) and her husband Jr. walk their lovely daughter Chantal down the aisle. During the ceremony, the gorgeous couple exchanged heartwarming and romantic wedding vows. The Candle and Chord Sponsors preceded us and the Coin Godparents followed us. It was such a joy to wrap the beautiful Bride and her dashing Prince Charming Al Santos with my hand-picked lace veil 👰🏻🤵♂️adorned with sequence and sparkling decor. Of course, the veil flowed well with the Bride’s elegant gown.
Since the bride and groom are both professionals: she was Magna Cum Laude in College (Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing, Registered Nurse) Al is a Pharmaceutical Tech at Kaiser Permanente Hospital and Costco Pharmacy 👍 sky was the limit as far as budget was concerned. I’m sure the bride’s parents wrote some huge checks too which is very much in line with Filipino pride and tradition.
Chantal had meticulously planned her grand wedding years prior. A wedding many young girls can only dream of. Only, this hard-working career woman made it her reality.
It was held at a mansion on manicured grounds, under cool yet sunny skies, in a romantic setting, with a touching ceremony. Lots of elegant formalwear, black ties, handsome suits, delectable hors d’oeuvres, amazing fine dining that catered to both vegans and carnivores, dreamy dry-ice floating during a super choreographed first dance, money dance with pinned Andrew Jacksons, Benjamin Franklins and a few George Washingtons, including money leis around the couple’s neck and spectacular fireworks galore. Cha-ching! 💥
~ In the Philippines, it is customary to have two sets of veil sponsors- one for the bride and one for the groom. The veil sponsors are also expected to be present during the wedding rehearsals and provide moral support to the couple before and after the wedding. They are also expected to give a heartfelt message during the reception, sharing their own experiences and imparting advice to the newlyweds.
Being a veil sponsor is not just a role for show, but it is a significant responsibility given by the couple to the chosen ones. It is a sign of trust and a testament to the bond between the couple and the veil sponsors. It is also a reminder of the importance of the institution of marriage and the need for guidance and support in every step of the way.
In conclusion, being a Filipino veil sponsor is not just a ceremonial role, but it is a significant responsibility that should be fulfilled with sincerity and reverence.
